Thayers Gull?

Posted in Unspecified

A quick look at the river today revealed an odd looking "Herring" Gull. Small and rather dainty looking-it's been around for a couple of months now. Hardly any black on its' wingtips, thinnish bill with only a small reddish thingy, no "mean" expression-I think it's a Thayers Gull. Actually there are always a few odd looking Herring-type Gulls in winter here. I'd post a pic if I could but I'd have to set up my 'scope in the middle of town. As a foreigner here I get enough funny stares as it is already. Otherwise not much else around-a few Tufted Duck, a lone Oriental Greenfinch-that's about it.

Thayer's?

Hi Stu-- nice-looking blogsite!

The thing that bothers me is the light primary tips. The outer webs of an adult Thayer's folded primary tips should look just about as dark as those of a Vega Gull-- if not pure black, then at least greyish-black. Maybe it's got some Glaucous-winged in it.

I'd sure like to see some of those other odd gulls that are hanging around up there. C'mon!-- you're going to look like a strange gaijin, no matter what you do or don't do!
