Hakodate Birding

A drive in the country

Posted in Unspecified

I drove east out of Hakodate 40 minutes or so to the small town of Esan today. On the sea there were numerous Brent Goose, Harlequin Duck, Red Breasted Merganser and Goldeneye. Also lots of Cormorants-both Temincks (or Japanese) and Pelagic. Strangely the further east we went the less snow there was (though it was extremely cold). A few raptors about too-abundant Black Kite, several Common Buzzard, 1 Peregrine and 1 adult White Tailed Eagle. Most rivers were frozen but there were a few that still had open water. I could see 19 Whooper Swan as well as a few Common Teal, Mallard and Goosander. 2 Grey Heron sat in a pine tree. Hardly any small birds at all-just 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker and a pair of Long Tailed Rosefinch. Lots of Gulls too including several Glaucous/Glaucous Winged of various ages.
