Hakodate Birding

checking out some fishing harbours

Posted in Unspecified

A bit milder today (well above freezing anyway and I could even see asphalt) and took a drive out to Shikabe and Sawara, 2 tiny fishing ports to the northeast of Hakodate. The first harbour in Shikabe held a single Brent Goose, 3 Goldeneye, a male Greater Scaup (below middle), a female Red Breasted Merganser, a female Harlequin Duck and 3 Mallard. Just offshore there were a few Black Scoter and several Red Necked Grebe. Sawara (which used to be famous for a regular wintering Gyrfalcon) provided thousands and thousands of Gulls with lots of Glaucous and Glaucous Winged. Here are pics of 1st winter Glaucous Gull (bottom) and a 1st winter Glaucous Winged (top). Also in Sawara were an 1st year White tailed Sea Eagle, Common Buzzard and hundreds of Black Kite. Eurasian Jay and Varied Tit were the only smaller birds around today. Had a quick look at Onuma on the way back were around 70 or so noisy Whooper Swans were being fed by 30 or so noisy Japanese tourists.
