Hakodate Birding

some woodland birds

Posted in Unspecified

Took a brief walk in the local park today. Goryokaku Park is a bit of a tourist attraction (some old reactionaries fought some newer reactionaries over 100 years ago here). The park is basically a fort surrounded by a moat. The moat is frozen in winter of course. There are quite often some interesting birds skulking around in the bushes and pine trees. A roving flock of paridae contained 4 species. Great Tit (one of the east asian subspecies-no yellow on its breast), Coal Tit (the same as in the UK), Varied Tit (a reddish one-very nice to look at) and a solitary Goldcrest. A female Eurasian Sparrowhawk was hunting just over the trees.
