WaxwingsI usually see Waxwings most Januarys. A couple of flocks of about 20 birds were around today. I could only get a brief glimpse of them from the car (whilst waiting at a red light) and the yellow spot at the end of the tail of one individual confirmed it was a Bohemian Waxwing. Whether there were any Japanese Waxwings (which have a red spot) is another matter-the lights had changed and we had to move on. Another extremely wintry day. We drove east to Esan and saw Black Necked Grebe, Whooper Swan, Brent Goose, Harlequin Duck and all the usual winter stuff on the sea. Best bird of the day was a male Yellow Throated Bunting hopping round in the snow. A beautiful little bird (with a black/yellow facial pattern and crest) and fairly uncommon this far north. Dined at Bikuri-Donki-a Japanese chain that (very) loosely interprets western food items. Our table faced the sea and during lunch there were 5 Black Scoter, 1 female Goldeneye and a Pacific Diver just offshore. I could just about see them through the blizzard. 2 important things looming-the Liverpool/Man U game on Sunday and my knee op next week (thankfully I'll get to see the game and Peter Crouch's inevitable last minute winner after Rooney's red card). Why is medical insurance so gaddamn complicated anyway?17:54 - 18/1/2006 - post comment
