Hakodate Birding

Harlequin Duck

Posted in Unspecified
I've been saying how cold it's been recently and today was REALLY cold. In the fishing harbours in Hakodate there were about 40 Brent Goose, 7 Eurasian Wigeon, various Gulls including a few Glaucous Winged, a few Japanese Cormorant and the inevitable Harlequin Duck (see the blurry male below). My wife snapped the Black Kite and showed much steadier hands in doing so. Not much else about-a female Siberian Meadow Bunting and a flock of Waxwing (couldn't see which species from the car) the only other noteworthy species. I also saw a few smallish looking crows being harassed by Jungle Crows. Maybe the smaller ones were the regular Japanese crows and the larger ones are invaders from the north pushed south by the extreme wintry conditions? Who knows.
