Hakodate Birding

more of the usual

Posted in Unspecified

Ventured outside for the first post-op birding. And hey guess what it was freezing cold and snowing. Half-heartedly checked out Horai-cho fishing harbour-poor visibility and only the following about-5 Wigeon, 5 Brent Goose, 3 Spot billed Duck, I female Goldeneye, 1 Japanese Cormorant and the usual 3 big Gulls (Slaty Backed, Herring and Glaucous Winged). Nearer my appartment I spent a good hour limping around trying to follow a large mixed flock of constantly moving Waxwing. There were about 100 individuals in all, mainly Japanese Waxwing but with a few Bohemian Waxwing mixed in (in previous years it's been the other way round). It was difficult to get a decent view and it was right in the middle of town on the main street so I felt a bit conspicious getting my binoculars out and a photo was out of the question (even if I'd had my camera). Lots of Dusky Thrush too and the grand total of 1 Hawfinch. Oh and did I say it was freezing?
