Hakodate Birding

Peregrine and other stuff

Posted in Unspecified

Drove east to the Menkawa river this Sunday afternoon. Menkawa is a tiny fishing village at the mouth of a river of the same name. There is a 7-11 store that mercifully sells hot food and drinks. On the river were 5 Grey Heron, 12 Whooper Swan, lots of the commoner freshwater ducks as well as a few (displaying) Goldeneye. The above Peregrine (apologies for the crappy photo) was hunting over the river causing the Common Teal a lot of panic. Lots of Gulls offshore including Glaucous Gull and (I'm pretty sure) some rafts of Black Legged Kittiwake out at sea. There was a bitterly cold westerly and this combined with the angle of the sun made seawatching a bit tricky. I managed to ID a Black Necked Grebe and in a raft of Duck there were 4 species-Goldeneye, Red Breasted Merganser, Goosander and 2 male Smew. Black Backed and Japanese Wagtail were the only smaller birds about. Elsewhere along the coast I got the usual common seabirds (Scaup, Brent Goose, Harlequin Duck, Pelagic Cormorant etc) and a male Blue Rock Thrush too. Back in town the Waxwings were still around. I saw a flock from my balcony this morning but couldn't see which species.
