Hakodate Birding

lots of snow but not many birds

Posted in Unspecified

The above pic is Tachi-machi misaki (Cape Tachimachi) early yesterday morning. It faces south across the Tsugaru Straits (which separates Hokkaido from Honshu). It's always cold and windy (the wind blasts a lot of the snow away in winter). I've seen lots of good birds here but today all I could manage were 8 Black Scoter, lots of Cormorants (both of the common species) and a few Gulls. It was as cold as I'd expected but just about bearable (previous winters have seen me driven to seek refuge in the only shelter on the cape-a public toilet). Drifts of snow made walking around pretty tricky. Can't believe I got up at dawn for this. Elsewhere in town there are still a few Japanese Waxwing around and lots of Dusky Thrush. Common Kingfisher and Grey Starling were added to the Hakodate local patch yearlist in the last couple of days. Liverpool's current slump in form is the only thing more depressing than the weather (the Black Scoter on the sea could have taken setpieces better than Alonso at Charlton).

The once mighty Liverpool.

I just can't understand the current slump in form of the Reds, after losing to a last minute goal at MANure they seem to have lost all their confidance too! It may be cold in Japan, but at least the birds seem to be good - well, at least to us Brits anyway.
