Whoopers

Posted in Unspecified

One of many Whooper Swans today at Lake Onuma. The lake was finally beginning to show signs of thawing (the last 2 or 3 days have been surprisingly mild). There were also Goosander, Tufted Duck, Goldeneye and lots of Mallards. Some Eurasian Nuthatch were being noisily active in the woods. Also around the lake-Northern Goshawk, Common Buzzard and Eurasian Jay. There are still people ice fishing on the lake. They make holes in the ice and catch loads of tiny little fish which are then cooked with soy sauce, sake and sugar and make a pleasant enough snack. Dunno if it's worth standing around on the ice for a few hours though. Here's a picture of the frozen lake with Mt Komagadake in the background.
