Hakodate Birding

Stellers Sea Eagle

Posted in Unspecified

A slightly better digiscoped Stellers Sea Eagle at Yakumo (my January ones being even worse). One of about a dozen Eagles of both species around today. Also on the river were the usual common Ducks as well as Varied Tit and Eurasian Jay in the woods. A Great White Egret just south of Yakumo was a surprise. Poking around in a semi-frozen river when it shouldn't even be in Hokkaido in summer let alone in winter (according to my ancient Fieldguide anyway). On the sea were the common seaducks and usual gulls:Black Scoter, Wigeon, Goldeneye, Greater Scaup, Red Breasted Merganser, Glaucous and Glaucous Winged Gulls etc. There aren't many good places to stop on Route 5 (the mainroad north out of Hakodate along the coast) and there always lots of birds just tantalisingly glimpsed for a second bobbing round on the sea out of ID range from a speeding car.......what are they? Grebes? Alcids? Divers? The last few days have been surprisingly mild meaning there are lots of puddles of icy water on top of the ice. Got a nice balcony bird 2 days ago. The flocks of Waxwing I sometimes see flying around flew close enough to the window to be identified. Japanese Waxwing. Red spot on the tail.

Fine photos

Ooh, the eagle is good indeed-- and I think the little photos with which you spice up your narrative are consistently attractive. Very tasteful. And the fox is outstanding, however you got him to sit there and pose.
