A few days have passed of disgustingly heavy wet sticky slushy snow. Not too many birds nearby. About 50 Dusky Thrush passed through today and there was a Little Grebe on the river near my appartment yesterday. And 2 or 3 male Daurian Redstarts (or the same one following me up and down the river). Went to Kamiso a couple of days ago and saw pretty much the same stuff as last week (minus the Grebes). The only noticeable arrival was a group of Black Headed Gulls sheltering from the icy wind. Some of them were even coming into summer plumage (well almost). The pic here is of a Slaty Backed Gull which is definitely coming into summer plumage. Yes it looks just like other large dark backed laridae species around the world........................but at least it shows spring is in the air. There were even some buds forming on some of the trees.
