Thursday, March 27, 2008 - Snowy Day Birding

My friend Paul and I took advantage of a late March snowstorm to look for migrating longspurs today. We scoped 1000's of Lapland Longspurs along a corn laden rock road in Woodbury Co, IA but no Smith's or Chestnut-collared Longspurs were to be found, which may have been due to them flying around and moving so often.  The Killdeers did not help us at all, because when they called all the longspurs would fly up and would usually end up someplace else. We did end up finding  a mixed flock of blackbirds which contained about 30 Rusty Blackbirds and earlier in the day I saw two Brown-headed Cowbirds. We also saw an amazing 24+ Northern Harriers as we were out and about with as many as 4-5 being seen from one spot.
