Chinese Yellow Bittern DELETED from British and Western P List
Following an exhaustive review by the BOURC (see British Birds 101: March 2008 137-141), the record of Chinese Yellow Bittern is no longer considered acceptable (said to have been found freshly dead at Radipole Lake, Dorset, on 23rd November 1962). This record was originally mentioned in the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society Proceedings (Volume 84: 63) and then fully documented by me in 1994 (see Evans 1994, Rare Birds in Britain 1993, pages 30-31).
As a result of the review, the species is now removed from both the UK400 Club Definite List of Birds of Britain and Ireland and Definitive List of Birds of the Western Palearctic.
The record is considered to be fraudulent, due to anomalies in reporting, finding and plumage condition.
