Following last winter's major displacement of Coues's Arctic and Mealy Redpolls, Andy Davis has just very kindly informed me of an invasion of TWO-BARRED CROSSBILLS taking place currently in Nova Scotia, CANADA. Andy recorded a flock of at least 70 birds during 20-29 July near Barrington, as well as several smaller flocks of up to 20 birds. Similarly, Ontario birders are reporting unusual numbers during the past two weeks.

 

The invasion is clearly widespread, and is occurring throughout Scandinavia as well. It looks as though all records will be broken.....Britain has currently recorded 12 birds and rising...previous irruptions involved 25 birds in 1987, 24 in 1990 and 17 in 2002.

 

I would be most grateful to hear of the irruption from other areas, particularly Siberia (Russia)
