After a review of the 8 British records of NORTH AMERICAN MARSH HAWK Circus hudsonius (published in Evans 1991, Rare Birds in Britain 1800-1990, page 103) and comprising single 'ringtails' at Cley/Salthouse (Norfolk) from 26th October 1957 to 13th April 1958, St Agnes (Scilly) on 10th October 1967, Wicken Fen (Cambs) from 29th October to 18th November 1972, Saltfleetby (North Lincs) from 18th November 1973 to mid March 1974, Steart Point (Somerset) on 27th January 1979, on St Agnes and St Mary's (Scilly) on 16th October 1979, on St Mary's (Scilly) from 22nd October 1982 to 7th June 1983 and at Hengistbury Head (Dorset) on 22nd October 1983, just ONE record remains ACCEPTABLE - the juvenile present on St Mary's (Scilly) from 22nd October to 7th June 1983 (fully documented in British Birds 101: 394-407).

In accordance with proposals put forward by scientific study, and in line with Ferguson-Lees & Christie 2001, Raptors of the World, and Simmons 2002, Harriers of the World, the UK400 Club 'split' North American Marsh Hawk from Hen Harrier Circus cyaneus in 1998.
