World's Primates in freefall - some species have declined by as much as 92%

Demand for Palm Oil and its consequent destruction of Rain Forest habitat across the continents has seen the death of huge numbers of wild animals and birds, so much so that more and more species are now on the brink of extinction. Much of this demand has been brought about by those championing the climate change prophecies, with alternative fuels high on the agenda as a means of combatting the process. This is having a detrimental effect on our wildlife, and taking away the one thing - trees - that breathe life into our planet.

A new report published today reveals the plight that the majority of our primates face, with 78% of the World's species now registered in one of three endangered categories - many critical. Although the demand for Palm Oil is a major factor and one that can be reversed, large numbers of these intelligent animals are still being taken for the pet trade or killed for so-called 'magic potions'. Is there any way we can stop this destruction or are we just going to see more and more creatures as historical statistics.

Beijing has proven that wild animals can be saved if there is enough momentum behind a government to force it, the WWF recently highlighting the dramatic and wonderful reverse in fortunes of the once endangered GIANT PANDA.

The destruction of the forests MUST stop if there is a remote chance of coming back from the brink - if not, at least 1,364 species of bird will soon be featuring in Erik Hirshfeld's all-important doomday-book
