wild falklands

Sat-19-Sep-2009 - spring here/ fri 18th sept

after going down to gypsy cove on the 15th to see if the magellanic penguins were back , they were not.

friday afternoon we went out on our yacht , went about 2 miles off shore. The sooty shearwaters are back and so are the magellanic penguins at sea anyway. the closest ones were at the enterance of port william which is about 4 miles from there rookery at gypse cove.

The flightless steamer duck is back in our ware house at the dock looking for a nesting place(4th year)so have put a box out for her. Last year she raised 5 ducklings, hatching time usaully in volves us in some sort of rescue mission and normally not receiving a lot of gratitude from dad. talking of mr duck not sure but it could be that he has two ladies on the go, either that or he eye sight not good and a female of another pair slips by him to get into ware house(only one way in).
