Got some birding in again yesterday. There had been another storm overnight, and whilst most of the fallen trees had been cleared there were still enough to cause problems. For those of you who are not familiar with the Quoile Pondage it is fresh water beside Strangford Lough, which is a sea lough. The area was created by the building of a barrage as flood control for nearby Downpatrick. The whole area is a nature reserve, with a good hide. Usually there are a number of very small islands in front of the hide where a variety of ducks sit out. Yesterday the water level was above the islands.
Quoile Pondage - mute swan, goldeneye, wigeon, teal, greylag geese, lapwing, grey heron, mallard, tufted duck, sparrowhawk, herring gull, black-headed gull, lesser black-backed gull, greater black-backed gull, little grebe, golden plover, cormorant, coot, wren.
Co Down in general - Rook, crow, jackdaw, blackbird, robin, pheasant, yellowhammer, shelduck, dunlin, mistle thrush, song thrush, fieldfares, starling, kestrel.
Posted by dawnc at January 10, 2005 09:21 PMGlad you make it out in rough weather. Here in california the storms have been so bad, I haven't made it out birding for 2 weeks! We're soft over here.
Posted by: jono at January 11, 2005 08:23 AMhello!
I am quite new to birding but just writing as you've mentioned where I'm from, Co. Down! We have only very recently discovered the bird hide, and cant say we've seen as much as that in the summer as you did in winter!
ps, there's also some buzzards in Delamont, just outside killyleagh. a family, we think.
also, one other point, if you have seen or heard yellowhammers anywhere in N Ireland, give the RSPB a call on 02890 491547, and ask to speak to Kevin. He's doing a study into them and would appreciate any info,
happy birding!
