Hi birders world wide
This is my very first birding blog.
So a few details to fill you in. I retired and moved to this rural part of Spain in October,2002. I had lived all my life in the city of Glasgow - which is a good birdwatching base. So there was quite a contrast in the birdlife as you could imagine.
I have an almost daily routine of doing a two hour bird count walk with the oldest of our four dogs - ¨Scruffy¨now an amazing 20 years old!
I cover a variety of habitats on my walk. Being a rural farmland area the field crops comprise the biggest percent. The crops grown locally are Oranges, Olives, Almonds, Artichokes and Tomatoes. The majority of the cultivation and gathering is done by hand and very few pesticides are used. So this is wonderful for the birdlife. The weeds for example are ploughed every 2 or 3 months, so again good for the birdlife.
Other habitat covered in the walk are gardens, limited woodland with very few mature trees. The only mature trees are Carob (the pods of which are used for cattle fodder) and some Pine Trees. So the last birds I expect to see are Woodpeckers!
Another important habitat for the birds (and me) is the sea shore mixture of sandy beaches and rocky outcrops. There is also a small freshwater lagoon at a dried up river mouth - bathing place for gulls and terns and passage stopover for waders.
There is an area or two of heathland and a small sewage treatment plant both important for various species, either resident or on passage.
So hopefully that paints a picture of the habitat of the place.
Now for a list of birds seen in May of this year.

It was great to run into you near the orange and almond orchards of Alcossebre last Friday and to hear about your bird observations. Thanks for sharing all the photos and info. I saw the herons and egrets again that afternoon near Cap i Corb.
Does anyone live at that place at the end of the road with all the birds?
What a fun life you have there!
Meredith
Hi Birdman
We keep hearing a bird singing it sounds from the description that it might be a Golden Oriole but we have never seen it despite all efforts. We live by the sea next to wide open country in Peniscola. Is this possible.
Hi Birdman,
I'm coming to Alcossebre on holiday in August - can you tell me where I need to go to see the Bee-eaters please?
Posted by: Barry at June 10, 2005 04:51 PMBack in England. Dull, wet and NOT sunny. Missing Alcossebre but back in 3,628,800 seconds!- about six weeks! We have a wood pigeon nesting in a tree in the garden - not quite in the same league as the golden oriole at los Frutales!! Great site. See you soon. Best wishes to Zara and the dogs.
Posted by: vivienne and maurice at July 25, 2005 11:03 AMVisited Joy and Jeff who live at La Palmera and saw the Bee Eaters in the bank of the river opposite their complex.I was hoping to see the Hoopoe. We have a rare visitor a pair of Bee Eater here in England in Hereford nesting in the river bank. Which has drawn all the Twitchers.

Posted by: Julie Horse at April 4, 2006 09:57 PMHello Birdman
I've left it late to contact you, but I have a house on Carreterra las Fuentes, and each time I manage to get out to it, there is always so much work to do, I have very little tiome to enjoy myself.
Please tell me where you can see the birds that you comment about in Capi Corp area.
I hope that I bump into you some time.
Kind regards,
Gordon Cox
