I'm a bit behind the curve this month. Lot's of competing projects.
SNOWY OWLS officially left on March 4, though a single bird was seen on March 18, presumably a northbound bird from farther south. RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS arrived at my home feeder on March 2, right about average arrival. A feeder peak of 9 birds on March 27 was quite spectacular.
Both ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS and COMMON YELLOWTHROATS were late this year. Normally, both of these species are seen by the 3rd week in March, this year both were seen after April 1st.
There was a remarkable die-off of RHINOCEROS AUKLETS associated with unusually cold weather early in the month. HORNED PUFFINS and FORK-TAILED STORM-PETRELS were also among the dead birds on the beach.
