After an unusual weekend where i did no birding i managed to slip out on sunday afternoon at the news of a grey cheeked thrush on the old head of kinsale!
when i arrived with my guest for the weekend at the plantation there were already a number of birders who had been there and seen the bird...and a number who had'nt...The wind was gettin up and rain was coming...it didnt look good...I walked into the plantation in the hopes of bumping into the bird...i found it hard to focus my eyes in the gloom and saw what i thought was a mouse scurrying through the undergrowth.
When i emerged from the plantation the hawfinch was showing well in a hawthorn..and i discussed the thrush with Phil D...who had seen it and claimed the bird looked like a mouse running on the ground....It suddenly hit me that it was the thrush i had seen...not a mouse.....i was about to go back in when suddenly the bird flew out of the plantation...right by my face..showing the underwing pattern...The bird eventually showed very well allowing itself to be scoped...Truly a class mini twitch!
