While visiting my parents, I decided to scour the local woods in search of the Scarce 7-spot Ladybird, which is found exclusively close to Wood Ant colonies. Plenty of ants, no ladybird (perhaps due to the chilly start to the morning).
I watched a pair of Great Spotted Woodpeckers repeatedly delivering beakfuls of grubs to their nest-hole.
As is so often the case, the most enjoyable part of the walk was a completely unexpected - I stumbled upon a family party of Long-tailed Tits. These tiny furballs with a tail are cute enough as adults, but the big eyes, round heads and small bills of the young birds take the cuteness factor to another level. Here are some of the better shots I obtained during 20 minutes spent with the family.
