Athens snowbirds

In a freak weather event, the city of Athens received 7 inches of snow over a period of about 12 hours on Sunday, felling trees and leaving thousands without power. These were the chaotic scenes from my front window.

Unsurprisingly, the snow brought an abundance of birds to the feeder.

Among them were a pair of Chipping Sparrows, only the second time I've seen them in the yard.

A Brown Thrasher finally ventured up onto the back porch...

... only to be 'snowballed' squarely between the eyes!

A snowy towhee.

A pair of Northern Flickers was also an unusual yard sighting.

More regular backyard fare.

The clear blue skies on Monday made for some nice photo ops in town and on campus.

Snow dawg.

Amazing to think that it's predicted to get up into the mid 70s by Friday!
