Surprise Surprise ! today I found a singing CORN BUNTING on the outskirts of Exeter , I heard it singing & then walk towards where the song was coming from & found the bird sat on top of a tree singing its heart out , this being only my second in Devon .
The bird was looked for later but was not seen again but heavy rain had come in by then & it could have gone into cover so it could still be possibly in the area .
This afternoon I got a call telling me that the OSPREY that has been around the Exe Estuary for a few days was showing again , so seeing that this was my first of the year I shot off down to Exton Station where I got distant views of the bird stood on a sandbar & in flight , also see was a SPARROWHAWK that shot through right in front of me .
I then went for a quick look at Bowling Green Marsh in Topsham but all I saw were numerous HOUSE MARTIN with a few SAND MARTIN & SWALLOW in with them .
This morning I went down to Orcombe Point at Exmouth to do a sea watch but as it was hammering down with rain I parked up & did it from the comfort of the car & I saw .
20+ GANNET , 20+ KITTIWAKE , 4 COMMON SCOTER , 10 COMMON TERN ,
4 SANDWICH TERN , a ROSEATE TERN , a dark phase ARCTIC SKUA ,
& I was lucky enough to see 6 STORM PETREL following a fishing boat .
Myself & three other decided to go to the reserve at Leighton Moss in Lancashire today in hope that the White-Tailed Lapwing that was there yesterday would show up again today , but as there was no news on it when we arrived we decided to go for the family of EAGLE OWL that are at Dunsop Bridge & after a long walk we had superb views of 2 Adult birds & 3 chicks ,
also seen were a few SWALLOW & SWIFT & a singing GARDEN WARBLER .
We then went to the Leighton Moss reserve but there was still no sign of the W-T Lapwing & all we saw was a Male & Female MARSH HARRIER & a BEARDED TIT .
News of an adult WOODCHAT SHRIKE down at Dawlish Warren had me dashing off down there in hope that it would still be there & my luck held as the bird was still there & showing very well in the Greenland Lake area .
Also seen was a SWALLOW & a WILLOW WARBLER & a very nice show of Southern Marsh Orchids .
