Another look around the Topsham Recreation Ground / Exe Estuary this afternoon got me the juvenile SPOTTED SANDPIPER , 2 COMMON SANDPIPER , a male RED-BREASTED MERGANSER , a LITTLE EGRET , a GREY WAGTAIL & this KINGFISHER !
Today I went for another look at the SPOTTED SANDPIPER at the recreation ground in Topsham & found it with 4 COMMON SANDPIPER , I managed to get these two shots of it in flight I know they are not to sharp but they do show the extent of white in the wing bars as there was a query on the bird today !!
Also seen were 3 PIED WAGTAIL , 2 GREY WAGTAIL , a KINGFISHER & a RAVEN .
The recreation ground in Topsham is just down the road from my house so this afternoon I went down for another look at the SPOTTED SANDPIPER that is feeding there on the edge of the Exe Estuary & the bird was showing very well , this is the first time that this species has been seen on the Exe Estuary so it is very welcome addition to the list .
Late yesterday evening I got news of a SPOTTED SANSPIPER on the Exe Estuary in Topsham where I live ! so first thing this morning I went down to look for it & found it on a small island with a couple of COMMON SANDPIPER with the high tide coming in & I got two views of it to be sure before I phoned the news out to a few people in hope that they would see it before the island got flooded !
But then news came out of a Black-Bellied Storm-Petrel up at the Severn Beach in Gloucestershire so a few of us went up for it but when we got there the news was that the bird had not been seen for a while ! but there was 3 LEACH`S-STORM PETREL seen & I got this shot of one of them , also seen were 30+ KITTIWAKE & a sub adult POMARINE SKUA .
This afternoon I went up to Woodbury Common to look for the RED-BREASTED GOOSE that has been seen there on a lake in the quarry & found it in with about 20+ MALLARD , the bird is unringed & fully winged but you still still cant be sure of the origin of the bird , but here is a distant photo of it in very windy conditions anyway .
Also seen was a RED-LEGGED PARTRIDGE & a DARTFORD WARBLER .
I have just had a weekend away in Somerset at a 60s music revival so today I had a look around at Brean Down & I saw 2 female BLACK REDSTART , 4 ROCK PIPIT , 30+ JACKDAW , 20+ SHELDUCK sat on the sea , a Kestrel & a single FIELDFARE not mind blowing I know but it was good to get in some fresh air after the heavy night before ughhhhhhhhhhh .
This morning I spent a couple of hours down at Dawlish Warren looking for a BLACK REDSTART that has been seen around the sea wall but all I got today was two flight views of the bird but when I looked at the spot where it had landed there was nothing to be seen , oh so frustrating !
but I did see 6 ROCK PIPIT & a few TURNSTONE .
On the way home I stopped off at Cockwood for a look at the Exe Estuary & saw a few BRENT GOOSE & I picked up a small grebe & thought it was the long staying Slavonion Grebe but in the end it turned out to be just a LITTLE GREBE .
This morning I stopped for a look at the Matford Marshes on the edge of Exeter & I saw a mixed flock of WIGEON & TEAL , a single male SHOVELER , & a COMMON SANDPIPER & a GREEN SANDPIPER .
Later in the day Andy Bond & myself went up to the RSPB Reserve at Greylake in Somerset to look for the reported Green-Winged Teal that has been seen there but there was no sign of today ! & there wasn`t a lot else around either with just a KESTREL & PEREGRINE FALCON , & this GREY HERON that flew past the hide .
