Third consecutive winter at St. John's. Observed every week or so among the 20,000 locally wintering gulls. Smallish size and darkish upper parts suggest Azorean or Portuguese origin. |

Found onboard icebreaking cargo ship MV Arctic hiding in the windlass! This ship often carries raptors, including snowy owls and Perigrine's from Greenland to Europe a few years ago. |

This subspecies is very rarely recorded in eastern North America. Note glimpse of the prominent black 'V' on throat, carrot-orange bill and body 10% larger than adjacent 'S.m. borealis'. |

Nearly annual in Newfoundland April 20 - May 10. This bird found refuge on coastal barrens at Cape Spear, the eastern most point of land in North America. Two others were present on a farm field 15 km away. |
