Just back from Chile: where Moustached Turcas, White-throated & Chucao Tapaculos, Chestnut-throated & Black-throated Huet-huets, Slender-billed Parakeets, Diademed Sandpiper-plover, along with Rufous-chested & Tawny-throated Dotterels, Magellanic Plover, Black-headed Duck, Ruddy-headed Goose, White-throated Caracara, Tamarugo Conebill, Magellanic Woodpecker and two Austral Rails seen. Eastern Australia and Tasmania: Regent and Painted Honeyeaters, Aussie Owlet-Nightjar, Superb Lyrebird, Superb Parrot, Gang-gang Cockatoo, Pink, Flame, Dusky and Scarlet Robins in Tasmania and Red-capped and Rose Robins on the mainland, Chowchillas, Tooth-billed Catbird, Beautiful Firetail, all 3 Aussie Frogmouths, Blue-faced Parrotfinch, Black-throated Finch, Freckled and Pink-eared Ducks, Hooded Plover, Little Penguin and others. Papua New Guinea: 23 BOPs (including male Mag BOP and Carola's Parotia in the same tree and male Brown Sicklebill calling from the Kumul bird table!), male Flame Bowerbird, pair of Papuan Whipbirds sound recorded and seen, Shovel-billed Kingfisher, New Guinea Harpy Eagle, nesting Doria's Hawk, Southern Crowned Pigeon, Mountain and Barred Owlet-nightjar, Little Paradise Kingfisher, Painted Quail-thrush (the last of the worlds quail-thrushes for me in the last two months!), Grand Munia, Wattled Ploughbill and White-bellied Whistler. A stint out to Cunnamulla in Queensland, Aus produced my final Quail-thrush (Chestnut-breasted), Hall's Babblers, Bourke's Parrots and a showy group of Ground Cuckoo-shrikes. Just finished in Western Australia picking up many of the endemics including Noisy Scrub-bird, Western Bristlebird, Rufous Treecreeper, Western Corella, and Red-eared Firetail. In Southern Australia where seen 4 species of Grasswren in 4 days (Striated, Short-tailed, Thick-billed & Eyrean), Inland Dotterel, Cinnamon & Chestnut Quail-thrushes, Plains-wanderer added. In Borneo adding Black-headed, Hooded and Blue-headed Pittas, Bornean Bristlehead, Bornean barbet, Fruit-hunter, Whitehead's Trogon and Spiderhunter. In Malaysia adding Mountain Peacock-pheasant, Cutia, Rusty-naped, Garnet and Banded Pittas, Malaysian Railbabbler, Large Frogmouth, Reddish Scops Owl and others to the year list. A few good birds in Arizona, including Tufted Flycatcher in the Portal area, Five-striped Sparrow in Cal Gulch, Flame-colored Tanager in Madera, and finally Spotted Owl (nesting) in SE Arizona. In High Island, Texas adding a more migrants like Veery, Philly Vireo, Ovenbird, and others, Swainson's Warbler, Painted Bunting, and Worm-eating Warbler, before I head to SE Arizona. Also added spome pineywoods birds including Red-cockaded Woodpecker, Brown-headed Nuthatch and Bachman's Sparrows. A few others in Ghana including Western Bluebill. Yellow-headed Picathartes, Black & Rosy Bee-eaters and Pel's Fishing-Owl in Ghana. Five-colored Barbet, Black-tipped & Blue Cotingas, Black-breasted Puffbird, Brown Wood-Rail, Hoary Puffleg (at Tandayapa Bird Lodge), and Stub-tailed Antbird in northern Ecuador. |

Just back from Antarctica and Patagonia where highlights included a mega encounter with Emperor Penguins in the Weddell Sea, Hooded Grebes, Patagonian Tinamou and Austral Rail on the mainland. Comoros and Northern Madagascar in October: excellent tour with all Comoro endemics, Red Owl, Sakalava Rail, Madagascar Pochard, Amber Mountain Rock Thrush etc. PNG - very wet but great birds including Shovel-billed K, plenty of great BoPs including Buff-tailed Sicklebill, NG Harpy etc etc Red-legged Crake, a long overdue tick in Singapore en route. In May, tours to France (Rock Partridge, Wallcreeper etc) and Taiwan (great views of both endemic pheasants, partridge, Fairy Pitta, Little Curlew, Asiatic Dowitcher etc). Previously, excellent Western Mexico tour with just about all specialities seen very well (inc 15 nightbirds, 9 jays inc Tufted, Aztec Thrushes, Slaty and Dwarf Vireos, Elegant and Banded Quails plus Baja endems etc) and a great tour to Colombia - 670+ species inc great views of 11 Antpittas and many many more! |
