After returning from Junction, I dropped Steve off at his home and stayed at my house before leaving early for High Island. One of the first birds I saw was is one of my favorite warblers, a male American Redstart.
.
Actually, things were kind of slow. The most exciting part of the morning was when I went to the meadows to look for Indigo Buntings, I saw the Bobcat that has been defecating on the boardwalk on a regular basis since I first started going to High Island. To really show me his disdain for me, he even urinated on the trail as he walked away.
Digging deeper for the birds, I found several members of the thrush family, including a Swainson’s Thrush and Wood Thrush.
.
Unfortunately, there wasn’t much more being seen on the trails, except for a Black-thoated Green Warbler There were some decent birds going to the drip, but no good pictures (because I still don’t have the ability to take decent shots of the birds that far away in that dark of a location). Hopefully, I will get things straightened out with more experience using my digiscoping setup. A Swainson’s Warbler was in and out of the drip, which I had never seen in the past years that I had birded High Island. Usually, they are skulking around in the thick brush on the trails. Also, the first of the year Rose-breasted Grosbeak was there too. The Mulberry trees were not full of grosbeaks the way they have been in years past so this bird is late compared to previous years.
Some of the photo opportunities that I was able to take advantage of included this Ruby-throated Hummingbird and Great-crested Flycatcher.
.
This White-throated Sparrow was extra sharp, and I just had to take a picture of it.
I went to The Rookery at the of the day with Sam Woods and Scott Watson from Tropical Birding. We shot pics of the resident waders as they flew to roost.
.
On the way out to my hotel room, I ran across some Common Grackles just sitting on the fence next to the road.
I added 15 species to my state list, to leave me with 292 for the year. I decided that I wanted to break 300 by the end of the weekend, so I decided to find the easiest birds that I needed to get to add 8 species on Monday.
