Caught in the act

The other day I was lucky to catch a Buzzard (Buteo Buteo) circling and diving for his prey.

I had the cam on single shot, so I didn’t catch it all.
But maybe better this way, or the quality would have even been worse I guess. I was close (about 50m), but still quite a bit away, so the shots are already quite “pixeled".

Anyhow, it’s the first time I caught one on the hunt.
He didn’t catch whatever he was after, but in the 4th shot you see him with some fur in his beak :)

Common Chaffinch / Buchfink / Fringilla coelebs

Common Chaffinch / Buchfink / Fringilla coelebs

Common Chaffinch / Buchfink / Fringilla coelebs
This is the first Common Chaffinch I saw in our yard. Actually, the first one I ever saw.
It really pays off to walk around with your eyes open :)

They are supposedly around from Jan – Dec.
Height is about 15cm.
The breast is red brown and the neck grey.
I guess this one’s a male. My smart book says that the females are less colourful.
It makes an intense sound, sort of monotone (at least that’s what he did this morning).
It’s a common species everywhere where there are trees. There are over 10 million breeding couples which makes him the most common bird in Middle Europe.

Marsh harrier, Rohrweihe, Circus aeruginosus

Marsh harrier, Rohrweihe, Circus aeruginosus

Cuckoo, Kuckuck, Cuculus canorus

Length: approx. 50cm Family: Buzzard around from March – Oct

Angle of the wings during sailing and gliding looks like a “V", like with all harriers, but the marsh harrier is bigger than the others, the wings are broader and rounder and the tail seems shorter.

They can be found in reed beds, farm land and wet land. They are more common in the North than in the South. There are big gaps between places where they are common.

These species is more bound to water and wet lands than other harrier species. Their nest usually is in the reed bed over the water.
During breeding time animals that live close to the water and small bird chicks are their main food source.
