Paddyfield Warbler at Pagham

With a quiet afternoon on the cards I popped once again over to Pagham Hbr in search of the elusive Paddyfield Warbler. I had a walk along the sea wall with the dog before settling near the bench overlooking the Breach Pool. I spent an hour or so viewing the area picking a nice Female Marsh Harrier causing concern as it quartered the marshes. A pair of Bearded Tits also showed well at the back of the pool. I did not see a Water Rail today but I certainly heard several squealing away in the cover of the reeds. Good numbers of Brent Geese were present passing between the harbour and a feeding area in the distance. Probably around a thousand birds in total. After a while a small group of birders picked up a Warbler in the reeds and eventually most of us got half views as it made its way through cover.  It then flitted towards another small patch of reeds and alighted in the grass at the front but again only fleeting glimpses. Interestingly as the bird flew it looked rather pale to me but on looking at the Birdguides pictures the image taken on a dull day looks paler than the bird in sunshine. Not surprising I suppose. The Warbler then flew further away into a more grassy and sedge area where it spent the next twenty minutes feeding and although I picked it up several more times it was just too distant in my scope to be 100% on the id as I only had my mini scope with me. I could pick up the paler underneath and darker back but not the pale supercillum.  Fortunately plenty of other birders had better optics than I and several were positive it was the Paddyfield warbler and several others picked up the supercillum and pale throat.
