A NEW CITRINE WAGTAIL AT TÍAS GOLF COURSE

by Francisco Javier García Vargas, Antonio Unquiles Cobos & Juan Sagardía Pradera

On 05/IV, our friend David Pérez found a Citrine Wagtail at Tías golf course, informing us quickly about the finding.

The bird was seen still there on 06/IV (F. J. García Vargas), on 07/IV (A. Unquiles Cobos) and on 08/IV (J. Sagardía) and not seen again since that day.

This is the second record of this species for Tías golf couse and our fourth for Lanzarote.

Previous in Arrecife and Famara plains.

FEBRUARY-MARCH 2012 LANZAROTE REPORT

by Francisco Javier García Vargas

On February-March 2012, two new species were added to our list of birds observed in Lanzarote: Common Pochard (1 female detected by our friend David Pérez at Tías golf course on 25/III and seen there the same day (F. J. García Vargas, A. Unquiles Cobos). The bird remained at the same place until 27/III (F. J. García Vargas).

The second addition will be without any doubt the highlight of the season: African Desert Warbler (1 bird found by Michael John, a birdwatcher on holidays in Lanzarote, on 24/III in bushes of a little sandy beach near Punta Mujeres, where was seen again on 25/III (F. J. García Vargas, A. Unquiles Cobos). Despite the efforts of other local birders, the bird was not seen again. Besides the pictures showed in this entry, a special photo page of this rarity (if accepted, first for Lanzarote) can be seen here.

About another rarities, the Ring-billed Gull found at Arrecife on January 2012, was relocated at Puerto del Carmen on 11/II, where remained until at least 08/III (F. J. García Vargas, A. Unquiles Cobos, J. Sagardía).

1 Eurasian Scops Owl was found dead on a road at Tahíche on 12/III (J. Sagardía).

On a spectacular year for Bluethroats, a little influx of this species produced the arrival of unprecedented numbers of birds to Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. Here in “our” island, the first bird was found during the afternoon of 10/III at Tías golf course by our friend Julio Rodríguez Martínez and I could see the bird in the evening of the same day.

The bird remained there until at least 20/III (F. J. García Vargas, J. Sagardía).

THE AFRICAN DESERT WARBLER IN THE COAST OF HARÍA, FIRST FOR LANZAROTE

by Francisco Javier García Vargas and Antonio Unquiles Cobos

On 25/III/2012, Michael John, a birdwatcher on holidays in Lanzarote, informed Juan Sagardía about a warbler that he photographed on 24/III in coastal bushes near Jameos del Agua, in the NE coast of Lanzarote.

The bird was an African Desert Warbler Sylvia deserti.

Juan Sagardía was out of Lanzarote and he informed us about the finding.

In the afternoon of 25/III, we went there and found the bird, a beautiful very pale warbler.

The bird was very tame and we could observe it nearest than one meter.

This will be (if accepted) the first record of this species for Lanzarote.

During the afternoon of 22/I/2012 and accompanied by our friend Julio Rodríguez Martínez, we could detect a 1st. winter Ring-billed Gull Larus delawarensis inside  a group of gulls that were resting at El Reducto beach (Arrecife).

The group was formed by Lesser Black-backed and Yellow-legged Gulls and later a Mediterranean Gull appeared too.

The bird was quite tame and, despite its smaller size, we could see it fighting with Yellow-legged Gulls.

This is our third record of this species for Lanzarote, and pictures and details of previous records can be seen here and here.

THE LITTLE BUNTING AT TEGUISE GOLF, FIRST FOR THE CANARY ISLANDS

by Juan Sagardía Pradera

On 08/I/2012, I could detect a Little Bunting Emberiza pusilla at Teguise golf.

The bird was feeding on the floor associated to some Berthelot´s Pipits and it was quite tame and confiding so was no difficult to obtain a good series of pictures.

I made telephone calls to my friends and half an hour later, F. J. García Vargas was there, watching and photographing the bird too.

This is a totally unexpected addition to our list and will be (if accepted) the first record of this species for the Canary Islands.

THE ALLEN´S GALLINULE AT TÍAS GOLF COURSE, FIRST FOR LANZAROTE

by Francisco Javier García Vargas

On 22/XII, I could see an Allen´s Gallinule Porphyrio alleni at Tías golf course. The bird was quite shy and nervous so was a little bit difficult to approach it.

Despite it, I could take some mid distance pictures of it.

This is the second bird (if not the same) of the season for the eastern Canary Islands, after the bird seen this month at Rosa de Catalina García (Fuerteventura) and (if accepted) it will be the first record of this species for Lanzarote.

 NEW

-23/XII/2011 NEWS:

The bird was still present at the same place (F. J. García Vargas, A. Unquiles Cobos) and I could obtain better pictures than yesterday.

7 DECEMBER 2011 FUERTEVENTURA REPORT

by Juan Sagardía Pradera

Knowing about the presence of an Allen´s Gallinule at Rosa de Catalina García, I decided to make a new one day trip to Fuerteventura, looking for this african rarity.

Luckily I could see the bird and obtain a good number of photographs of it. Besides I could see that the Blue-winged Teal detected in Rosa de Catalina García in November was still there.

But one of the best surprises of this trip was a Great Bittern at the same place, where a Spotted Crake was present too.

By last, 2 Ring-necked Ducks were detected at Los Molinos reservoir.
