DECEMBER 2009 LANZAROTE REPORT

by Francisco Javier García Vargas

On December 2009, two new species were added to our list: African Swamphen (1 bird seen by J. Sagardía and F. J. García Vargas at Tías golf course on 31/XII. This is the same bird captured, ringed and released into the wild at Gran Canaria on October 2009. The bird has remained at the same place until at least 02/I/2010. A special photopage of this rarity can be seen here). The second addition was Brambling (2 birds seen by J. Sagardía on 7 and 8/XII at Teguise golf course. At least one bird have been seen by the same observer near Teguise golf course in January 2010).

About other rarities, the Greater Flamingo has remained at Janubio salt pans until January 2010, the 2 Greater Scaups at Tías golf course remained there until 01/XII (F. J. García Vargas), 1 Grey Phalarope was seen on a pelagic trip to sea at North of the island on 06/XII, and Yellow-browed Warblers have been at Uga, where 2 birds were seen on 05/XII and at least 1 on 08/XII (J. Sagardía), detecting 1 on 29/XII (F. J. García Vargas). We have been informed by Jyri Heino about the presence of two birds calling at the same time in gardens at Uga on 27/XII, writing me what follows:

“Sunday morning 27.12 I was driving to the Janubio-ponds and did a short stop
at Uga. After an hour I had seen and heard two (2) Yellow-Browed Warblers.
Both birds were at the same side (SE) of the village and quite near (200m)
each other, but after several checking I am sure there was 2 birds.”

We would like to thank Jyri Heino for this information.

García Vargas), 1 Great Shearwater was seen on the pelagic trip to sea at North of the island on 06/XII, 1 Great Cormorant was seen by J. Sagardía near El Golfo on 06/XII, Eurasian Spoonbill (8 birds (the highest number ever seen) at Órzola on 06/XII and 3 birds at La Santa on 08/XII (J. THE AFRICAN SWAMPHEN AT TÍAS GOLF COURSE, FIRST FOR LANZAROTE

by Juan Sagardía Pradera and Francisco Javier García Vargas

On 31/XII J. Sagardía detected an African Swamphen Phorphyrio (porphyrio) madagascariensis at Tías golf course. He immediately phoned me and I was there ten minutes later. The bird was so tame and we could obtain a good number of pictures of it.

Since the first time, J. Sagardía saw that the bird was ringed and we think that it is, without any doubt, the same bird collected very exhausted at Gran Canaria on 02/X/09, brought to a recovery center where it was ringed and released into the wild at Charca de Maspalomas (south of Gran Canaria) on 25/X/09. Details about the Gran Canaria record (First for Spain) can be seen here and here.

The bird was relocated at the same place on 01/I (A. Unquiles Cobos) and 02/I (J. Sagardía).

This is the first record of this species for Lanzarote.
