LESSER WHITETHROATS AT TÍAS GOLF COURSE. FIRST FOR THE CANARY ISLANDS

by Juan Sagardía Pradera

Into the context of my lucky week, in the morning of 22/X and again at Tías golf course, I found a Lesser Whitethroat Sylvia curruca inside a lemon tree.

The bird was very shy and nervous, and was very difficult to obtain a clear image of it. But what was my surprise when I discovered that there was no even one bird, were two!

After some hours of efforts, I could take some pictures of both birds.

I made a telephone call to Francisco Javier García Vargas, and he visited the golf course in the afternoon joined by A. Unquiles Cobos, and they could find at least one of the birds, taking some photographs of it.

Those birds were observed inside a big fall of migrant passerines, involving Tree Pipit, Yellow Wagtail, Common Redstart, Whinchat, Common Whitethroat, Western Orphean, Sardinian, Subalpine, Sedge, Reed and Willow Warblers and good numbers of Spotted and Pied Flycatchers.

I returned to the golf course on 23/X and one bird was still there.

On 24/X and when I have left the island, F. J. García Vargas told me that the weather has changed, with strong NE winds, and the most of the migrant passerines were not present.

This will be (if accepted) the first record of this species for the Canary Islands.

THE BOBOLINK AT TÍAS GOLF COURSE. FIRST FOR THE CANARY ISLANDS AND SPAIN

by Juan Sagardía Pradera

In the afternoon of 21/X, when I was at Tías golf course, I could detect a Bobolink Dolichonyx oryzivorus.

I made a quick telephone call to Francisco Javier García Vargas, who arrived to the golf course some minutes later.

I met him at the entrance of the golf course and I showed him the pictures that I have taken, and he could confirm that the initial identification of the bird was correct.

We went inside the golf course and after some minutes, we could relocate the bird, seeing it together for some minutes and taking new pictures.

We made a telephone call to Antonio Unquiles Cobos, who visited the course after we left it.

He has success and could observe the bird and take some photographs too.

On 22/X, I looked for the bird in the morning and F. J. García Vargas and A. Unquiles Cobos in the afternoon, but we could not find it.

But surprisingly, on 23/X, and when we have started to think that the bird was gone, I relocated it again, into a flock of Trumpeter Finches.

This is the first observation of this mega on the Canary Islands and Spain, our first observation of a nearctic passerine in Lanzarote and one of the few ever made in the archipelago.

Now, we have a real big reason to remember October 2010!

AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS AT TÍAS GOLF COURSE AND LA SANTA

by Francisco Javier García Vargas

On 13/X/2010, I detected 1 juvenile American Golden Plover near the dump at Tías golf course. I made telephone calls to the local birders and some minutes later A. Unquiles Cobos was present in the place and we could observe the obliging bird together.

I returned to the golf course on 14/X, seeing that the bird was still there.

The most amazing was that on 14/X, I visited La Santa, detecting a new juvenile bird there.

I can´t remember a previous record for the Canary Islands of two birds at the same time in the same island.

The bird at Tías golf course was still there on 18/X (J. Sagardía) and the bird at La Santa was seen again there by A. Unquiles Cobos on 17/X.

These are our 2nd and 3rd record of American Golden Plover for Lanzarote, after the bird seen at La Santa on October 2006.

Details and pictures of this first sighting can be seen here.
