On 22/XII, I could see an Allen´s Gallinule Porphyrio alleni at Tías golf course. The bird was quite shy and nervous so was a little bit difficult to approach it.
Despite it, I could take some mid distance pictures of it.
This is the second bird (if not the same) of the season for the eastern Canary Islands, after the bird seen this month at Rosa de Catalina García (Fuerteventura) and (if accepted) it will be the first record of this species for Lanzarote.
NEW
-23/XII/2011 NEWS:
The bird was still present at the same place (F. J. García Vargas, A. Unquiles Cobos) and I could obtain better pictures than yesterday.

Hello ! Great blog you have here. The gallinule on Fuerteventura is no longer present. Could you give any update on the Lanzarote gallinule + exact location ? Thank you ! Gilles gilles.willem@dieteren.be

Hello Gilles.
The bird was seen last time at Tías golf course on 23/XII.
We have been looking for it after that day without success.

Gallinule update?
Hello again! Netfugl.dk mentions that the Gallinule has been seen today 29/12! Can you confirm this? Thank you, Gilles.

Hello Gilles.
A friend of mine relocated it yesterday and I have seen it again on 29/XII.

My wife & I went to the golf course on Jan 7 but could not see the gallinule. We did, however, see a stonechat there. Earlier that day we saw 3 egyptian geese at the Janubio saltpans. These are not mentioned in your bird list. Why is that?
Hello Derek.
We have never seen Egyptian goose in Lanzarote so great and interesting finding!
I will check the saltpans in the next days.

Francisco – my abject apologies! When I entered the earlier comment my wife and I were talking about the egyptian geese we had seen recently in the UK, and I typed in the wrong species name! It should have been ruddy shelduck. This is very embarrassing – I’m very sorry if it caused you unnecessary excitement.
On the bright side, it was nice to see the shelduck. Previously we have only seen them in Fuerteventura.
Regards
Derek Lea
Ok Derek.
Shelducks are more normal for Lanzarote
I visited Janubio two days after read your comment and I was sad because I thought that I have failed the geese, but now I´m more relieved.
Best wishes,
Francisco Javier
