THE ALLEN´S GALLINULE AT TÍAS GOLF COURSE, FIRST FOR LANZAROTE

by Francisco Javier García Vargas

On 22/XII, I could see an Allen´s Gallinule Porphyrio alleni at Tías golf course. The bird was quite shy and nervous so was a little bit difficult to approach it.

Despite it, I could take some mid distance pictures of it.

This is the second bird (if not the same) of the season for the eastern Canary Islands, after the bird seen this month at Rosa de Catalina García (Fuerteventura) and (if accepted) it will be the first record of this species for Lanzarote.

 NEW

-23/XII/2011 NEWS:

The bird was still present at the same place (F. J. García Vargas, A. Unquiles Cobos) and I could obtain better pictures than yesterday.

7 DECEMBER 2011 FUERTEVENTURA REPORT

by Juan Sagardía Pradera

Knowing about the presence of an Allen´s Gallinule at Rosa de Catalina García, I decided to make a new one day trip to Fuerteventura, looking for this african rarity.

Luckily I could see the bird and obtain a good number of photographs of it. Besides I could see that the Blue-winged Teal detected in Rosa de Catalina García in November was still there.

But one of the best surprises of this trip was a Great Bittern at the same place, where a Spotted Crake was present too.

By last, 2 Ring-necked Ducks were detected at Los Molinos reservoir.

NOVEMBER 2011 LANZAROTE REPORT

by Francisco Javier García Vargas

On November 2011, no new species were added to our list of birds observed in Lanzarote.

About rarities, 1 White-rumped Sandpiper detected on 06/XI by David Pérez at Los Cocoteros salt pans was still present there on 12/XI (F. J. García Vargas, A. Unquiles Cobos, D. Pérez), being a very elusive bird into a flock of Kentish and Collared Plovers.

We could only obtain a very poor record shot of this bird.

By the other hand, the Yellow-browed Warbler detected on 31/X by J. Sagardía near Teguise golf course was seen there again on 01/XI (F. J. García Vargas, D. Pérez, J. Sagardía) and on 03/XI (J. Sagardía, F. J. García Vargas).

About scarce migrants, 2 Ruddy Shelducks were seen at Janubio salt pans on 29/XI (F. J. García Vargas), 3 Eurasian Wigeons were at Tías golf course on 13 and 14/XI, remaining there 2 birds until 25/XI (F. J. García Vargas, A. Unquiles Cobos), 8 Black-necked Grebes were observed at Janubio on 18/XI (F. J. García Vargas) and 19/XI (A. Unquiles Cobos), detecting a total of 9 birds on 29/XI (F. J. García Vargas), being the highest number of birds seen until the moment.

1 Great Cormorant was detected at Arrecife on 27/XI (A. Unquiles Cobos, F. J. García Vargas), and seen there again on 28/XI (F. J. García Vargas), being the first twitchable for us.

1 Spoonbill was seen at Arrecife on 13/XI (F. J. García Vargas), where 2 birds were present on 27/XI (F. J. García Vargas, A. Unquiles Cobos), 2 Ospreys were observed near Playa Blanca on 04/XI (J. Sagardía) and 1 Hen Harrier was seen near Mala reservoir on 02/XI (J. Sagardía).

The Spotted Crake at Tías golf course was still there on 03/XI (J. Sagardía), where the Coot has been present all month (F. J. García Vargas, J. Sagardía, A. Unquiles Cobos) and a group of at least 10 Dotterels was detected on 19/XI at the same field of Famara plains where we have observed wintering birds on previous years (F. J. García Vargas).

A. Unquiles Cobos visited the area the same day later in the evening and counted a total of 25 birds of which at least 23 were still present on 22/XI (F. J. García Vargas).

1 Green Sandpiper was seen at Janubio salt pans on 29/XI (F. J. García Vargas) and Mediterranean Gulls have been seen at Janubio (1 bird on 05/XI (F. J. García Vargas), Arrecife (1 bird on 13/XI (F. J. García Vargas) and 1 bird on 27/XI (F. J. García Vargas, A. Unquiles Cobos) and at Costa Teguise (1 bird on 20/XI (F. J. García Vargas).

J. Sagardía counted a total of 7 Long-eared Owls on 02/XI at the same place of Haría where the species was detected last month, at least 7 Red-throated Pipits have remained all month at Tías golf course (F. J. García Vargas, J. Sagardía, A. Unquiles Cobos), 1 Stonechat was at Montaña Blanca on 01/XI (J. Sagardía, F. J. García Vargas) and another bird was seen at Los Valles the same day (F. J. García Vargas).

By last, 2 Goldfinches were seen at Zonzamas on 06/XI (J. Sagardía).

About common migrants, is remarkable the presence of a very late Pied Flycatcher at Barranco del Chafariz on 26/XI (A. Unquiles Cobos).

OCTOBER 2011 LANZAROTE REPORT

by Francisco Javier García Vargas

On October 2011, no new species were added to our list.

About rarities, 3 Pectoral Sandpipers were seen at Janubio salt pans on 02/X (F. J. García Vargas), being the first time that three birds are present together at the same time on the same place.

1 Lesser Withethroat was detected by J. Sagardía in a private garden at Montaña Blanca on 08 and 09/X, being the second record for Lanzarote and the Canary Islands. Sadly, the observer could not take pictures of this very elusive bird.

Unprecedented numbers of Grasshopper Warblers were seen at Tías golf course: 1 bird on 04/X (F. J. García Vargas), up to 3 birds were observed on 07/X (F. J. García Vargas), 2 birds on 07/X (J. Sagardía), 1 bird on 10/X (F. J. García Vargas) and finally 1 bird on 14/X (J. Sagardía). Based on our observations of Grasshopper Warblers in Lanzarote in the last years, made in both spring and autumn migrations, we think that this species is a scarce but regular passage migrant instead a rarity like it has been treated until the present day.

1 Yellow-browed Warbler was seen near Teguise golf course on 31/X (J. Sagardía). A special entry about this bird can be seen here.

By last, 1 Ortolan Bunting was seen near Tabayesco on 10/X (J. Sagardía).

About scarce migrants, 3 Ruddy Shelducks were seen flying over Tías golf course in the morning of 24/X (F. J. García Vargas), 1 Great Shearwater was observed during a pelagic trip to the South of the island on 15/X (J. Sagardía, A. Unquiles Cobos), the Spotted Crake at Tías golf course was seen there again on 23 and 28/X (F. J. García Vargas), 1 Common Coot was seen at Tías golf course on 10/X, remaining there until November (J. Sagardía, F. J. García Vargas, A. Unquiles Cobos), 1 Black-tailed Godwit was present at Janubio on 24 and 28/X (F. J. García Vargas),  1 Ruff was observed at Janubio on 02/X (F. J. García Vargas) and 2 birds at Tías golf course on 07/X (F. J. García Vargas), remainig 1 of the birds until 10/X (F. J. García Vargas, J. Sagardía).

3 Pomarine Skuas were seen during a pelagic trip to the South of the island on 15/X (J. Sagardía, A. Unquiles Cobos) and a juvenile bird was seen roosting on a shore of Janubio salt lake on 24/X (F. J. García Vargas), 2 Mediterranean Gulls were seen at Janubio on 18/X (F. J. García Vargas), remaining 1 bird there on 24/X (F. J. García Vargas) and 4 Long-eared Owls were detected by J. Sagardía on 14/X in a place of Haría that for the moment we are going to keep confidential.

At least 3 of the birds were still at the same place on 16/X (J. Sagardía, F. J. García Vargas, A. Unquiles Cobos). We don’t know if these birds are only migrants or wintering birds arrived from the continent or if these are birds arrived from other island of the Canaries trying to establish in Lanzarote like happened in Fuerteventura in recent years. We will keep studying these birds, trying to know if they stay in Lanzarote during the breeding season and to confirm a breeding record for the island.

In a good season for Wrynecks, 1 bird was seen at Uga on 08/X (F. J. García Vargas), but 10/X was the Wryneck’s day in Lanzarote and J. Sagardía the lucky observer, with 4 birds in gardens at El Cable, 2 birds at Tías golf course and 1 bird at Montaña Blanca.

A little group of Sand Martins was seen at Puerto del Carmen on 01/X (F. J. García Vargas), the first 2 Red-throated Pipits of the season was detected at Tías golf course on 23/X (F. J. García Vargas), remaining there until November, Grey Wagtails have been present at Janubio and Tías golf course, 1 Whinchat was seen at Famara plains on 03/X (F. J. García Vargas), 2 birds were seen at Tías golf course on 04 (F. J. García Vargas), 07 (F. J. García Vargas, A. Unquiles Cobos) and 10/X (J. Sagardía) and a good number of birds were seen at El Bosquecillo on 10/X (J. Sagardía).

1 very secretive Sedge Warbler was seen at Tías golf course on 04/X (F. J. García Vargas), 1 Reed Warbler was seen in the farm at Famara plains on 03/X (F. J. García Vargas) and 2 birds at Tías golf course on 04/X (F. J. García Vargas),

THE YELLOW-BROWED WARBLER AT TEGUISE

by Juan Sagardía Pradera

On 31/X I detected a Yellow-browed Warbler Phylloscopus inornatus in an area with bushes near Teguise golf course.

The bird was joined by a little group of Song Thrushes, 2 Blackcaps, 1 Common Withethroat and at least 4 Chiffchaffs.

I could hear the typical voice of the species and some pictures could be taken.

This is our fourth record of Yellow-browed Warbler for Lanzarote and details and pictures of the previous records can be seen here, here and here.

AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 2011 LANZAROTE REPORT

by Francisco Javier García Vargas

On August-September 2011 a total of seven (¡!) new species were added to our personal list of birds observed in Lanzarote: On 10 and 11/IX, two pelagic trips to the North of Lanzarote were arranged by J. Sagardía. During these trips, 1 Black-bellied Storm Petrel was seen on 10/IX, being the FIRST RECORD FOR SPAIN. Between 10 and 15 Wilson´s Storm Petrels were seen on 10/IX and 10 birds were observed on 11/IX, being the first records for Lanzarote, 8 Long-tailed Skuas were seen on 10/IX and 7 birds on 11/IX, being the first records for the island too and 4 South Polar Skuas were seen on 11/IX, being again the FIRST RECORDS FOR SPAIN. Pictures and details of these observations can be seen here.

About the other new additions, 1 Glossy Ibis was detected at Tías golf course on 10/IX (F. J. García Vargas, A. Unquiles Cobos), 2 Buff-breasted Sandpipers were present at Tías golf course between 8 and 27/IX, being the first documented record for Lanzarote (J. Sagardía, F. J. García Vargas, A. Unquiles Cobos. THE LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER AT TÍAS GOLF COURSE, FIRST FOR LANZAROTE

by Francisco Javier García Vargas

On 19/IX, I was at Tías golf course when I saw that the Buff-breasted Sandpipers and the Pectoral Sandpiper were still present.

A Ruff was joining them and I saw another wader feeding at the pond, so I approached it.

And for my joy, I could see that it was a Long-billed Dowitcher Limnodromus scolopaceus.

It was a spectacle to see three species of nearctic waders at the same time.

This will be (if accepted) the first record of Long-billed Dowitcher for Lanzarote and the eastern side of the Canary Islands.

THE PELAGIC TRIPS AT NORTH OF LANZAROTE ON 10 AND 11/IX/2011

by Juan Sagardía Pradera

On 10 and 11/IX, I arranged two pelagic trips to the North of Lanzarote.

A total of 26 birders enjoyed the trips, being some of them from the island and the most of the group coming from mainland Spain.

We travelled to about 60 miles to the North, and the trips were very productive, observing four new species for our list.

The bigger and astonishing surprises were: Black-bellied Storm Petrel (1 bird seen on 10/IX at 40 miles of Lanzarote, flying at 20 or 30 metres of the ship. This will be (if accepted) a FIRST FOR SPAIN.) and South Polar Skua (a total of 4 birds, watching 3 at about 57 miles of Lanzarote and a fourth at about 15 miles of the island. These birds will be (if accepted) the FIRST FOR SPAIN too).

The other first for our list were: Wilson´s Storm Petrel (a number of between 10 and 15 birds seen on 10/IX and 10 birds seen on 11/IX) and Long-tailed Skua (8 birds seen on 10/IX and 7 birds seen on 11/IX, first for Lanzarote).

Another highlights of the trips were: Great Shearwater (more the 50 birds seen both days), Manx Shearwater (10 birds on 10/IX and 15 birds on 11/IX), Sooty Shearwater (3 birds seen on 10/IX), Red Phalarope (1 bird seen each day), Pomarine Skua (1 bird seen on 10/IX and 3 birds seen on 11/IX), Arctic Tern (a number of between 15 and 20 birds seen on 10/IX and 13 birds seen on 11/IX) and Black Tern (2 birds on 10/IX and 1 bird on 11/IX).

Without any doubt a beautiful experience enjoyed by all the assistants.

I would like to thank Miguel Rouco for providing us his picture of Black-bellied Storm Petrel.

THE BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS AT TÍAS GOLF COURSE, FIRST FOR LANZAROTE

by Juan Sagardía Pradera

During the morning of 08/IX/2011, I was at Tías golf course when I found two birds walking in the grass.

I took my binoculars and for my surprise, I could see that the birds were two beautiful Buff-breasted Sandpipers Tryngites subruficollis, a very long awaited addition to our list of birds observed in Lanzarote.

I make telephone calls to the local birders, and some minutes later, F. J. García Vargas was there, watching the birds too.

Like is normal in this species, the birds were very tame and we could approach them very well, so we could take a good number of pictures.

A. Unquiles Cobos was at Tías golf course in the afternoon of the same day and he could see the birds well.

This is the first documented record of Buff-breasted Sandpiper for the island, probably the only one involving two birds together for all the Canary Islands and (if accepted), it would be the first accepted record for Lanzarote.
