Cetaceans Galore

While steaming to the location anboard the Maersk Traveller I saw a pod of 5 Peale’s Dolphins Lagenorhynchus australis and a pod of 4 Commerson’s Dolphins Cephalorhynchus commersonii. At the location I saw three species of baleen whales they were Antarctic Minke Whale Balaenoptera bonaerensis, Sei Whale Balaenoptera borealis and Dwarf Minke Whale Balaenoptera acutorostrata which was my first sighting of this sub species.

The first four images below are of the dive sequence of an Antarctic Minke Whale.

Below images are of Sei Whales

The below two images are of the Dwarf Minke Whale that came right alongside the vessel, in the second image you can see the diagnostic white flippers of this species.

On the trip back I saw my second new Cetacean for the trip in the form of two pods of Hourglass Dolphins Lagenorhynchus cruciger, they were a long way off but managed to get a record shot to confirm identification.
