Wharncliffe Woods and Nightjars

Evenings birding out at Wharncliffe Woods for the yearly outing for Nightjars but on the way we had to stop at Ingbirchworth Res. to add a bird to my club area list Common Scoter 12-off and all down at the far end of the res. along with the Scoters Little and Great Crested Grebes, Mallards and Tufted Duck.  Huddersfield area list now 144. Arriving at Wharncliffe and after the long walk evening had started to approach and soon Woodcooks gave themselves away with there squeaky calls in flight, Tawny Owls then started and finally the hoped for Nightjar gave himself away with the distintive churring,  seen Na! not this time maybe next

for a stunning video of Nightjar , in dayligt, see this posted by Videobirdman

Ingbirchworth and Broadstones Res

What I thought would turn out to be a fine day wasn’t with dark clouds, drizzle and wind few birds were seen. Birds noted were Whitethroat hiding amongst the gorse at Broadstones Swift, and House martins hawking the water at Ingbirchworth. Few duck species today Mallard and Tufted Ducks the ones noted with Great Crested and Little Grebes.

So it was back home to do a bit of photography of the House Sparrows in the back garden to end the day

Langsett Reservoir

A pleasant walk around Langsett Res today in sunshine, makes a chance. Birds seen today Spotted Flycatcher in car park along with Garden Warbler. Nothing much bird wise on the water but the usual Canada Goose flock with Common Sandpiper on the dam wall, overhead Swallows and House Martins with Kestrel hunting the grass verge. Woods gave Willow Warbler, Chiffchaff, Robin, Nuthatch and a new bird for the Huddersfield Club area list, for me was a Pied Flycatcher watched for about 20mins one busy female bird using one of nest boxes taking in nest material but no sign of the male at all
