Wallowa Country Dog

Last weekend, Andie accompanied Sarah and Max on a Wallowa County expedition.

She explored the edge of a huge glacial lake.

Max and Sarah drove around ranch country looking for birds. Every few miles, Andie jumped out of the car to check out the terrain and chew on some new species of grass.

We stayed at a cowgirl-themed bed and breakfast where Andie quickly got into character, with a little help from her people.

She also made a horse-friend! Babe the Buckskin was very friendly and eager to sniff the dog, just like Clark the Cat.

Andie was very vigilant while outside the house.

There were many sights and sounds to monitor in the open country.

Autumn Adventures

It has been a busy couple of months for Andie and her people. During the last week of September, Max’s friend Bill came for a visit from Minnesota. Andie barked loudly in protest of such a tall houseguest, but quickly warmed to the idea of having another person around to give out pets and treats.

Andie cam along for her first fishing trip on the Wind River. She enjoyed running up and down the bank, hopping on rocks, and chewing alder branches.

She waded the river, but refused to join Max for a swim.

During the last two weekends, Andie, Sarah, and Max returned to the beach.

As usual, the dog fell into her usual beach routine:

DIG

ROLL

REPEAT IF NECESSARY

Canada Dog

Yesterday, Andie returned from her first trip to Canada with Max and Sarah. Below are some high (and low) lights.

Riding the ferry with Sarah. A terrifying experience for the dog, but she quickly recovered.

Crunching a stick on a log. Always fun!

Learning about the 50th parallel with Max

Posing at the parallel with Sarah.

Tidepooling at Campbell River. The slippery rocks were tough to navigate.

The sandy beaches were much nicer. They even had ochre seastars.

Rock-hopping on the Campbell River, in search of a salmon.

Swimming in the Straight of Georgia. Not her favorite activity.

After an eventful week, the dog is now happily resting on her couch. She looks forward to our next vacation that does not involve a ferry ride.

Beach Weekends

Andie spent the last two weekends at the beach with Sarah, Max, and other family members.

Sarah’s grandfather Fred joined us on a survey of the Sand Lake beach for dead seabirds.

Andie found many fresh and dried pieces of kelp.

She chewed one for several minutes. The next morning, the kelp did not sit very well in her belly.

A week later, Andie, Max, and Sarah hiked along the east side of Netarts Bay.

After a lazy week in the heat, Andie had a lot of energy to burn and she used up a lot of it by digging.

She covered Sarah in sand.

She covered herself as well.

By the time we finished the walk, she was ready for big nap on the way home.

Scary Bridges

Last weeked, Andie, Sarah, and Max went to Newport. Andie loves to go places, like the beach, with Max and Sarah, but certain noise-making structures encountered along the way can really bum her out.

One example is the Yaquina Bay Bridge in the background above. Luckily, we were too far from the bridge while on these docks to hear the cars rumbling over the top.

Last year, Max, his mother Susan, and Andie visited Cathedral Park under the St. John’s Bridge. You can’t tell from the picture, but Andie was whimpering at the time.

After leaving Newport, Andie found a bridge that was much more to her liking. It was a nice and quiet footbridge over Beaver Creek at Ona Beach State Park. Max and Sarah enjoyed the bridge as well.

House-sitting and Beach-digging

Andie spent much of the last two weeks helping Max and Sarah house-sit for her grandparents. Andie was not thrilled about sharing her space with an attention-craving cat.

Andie and Clark interacted peacefully most of the time. Towards the end of our stay, however, Andie grew tired of the cat and began to actively screen her people from Clark’s advances.

When house sitting ended, we all went to the beach for the weekend.

Max found some large, wavy pieces of kelp that Andie loves to grab and thrash about.

When a dead bird was found, Andie began to dig a resting depression, kicking sand towards Sarah and Max.

Swim, Andie, Swim!

Andie visited the beach with Max and Sarah during the past two weekends.

On Memorial Day Weekend, she shared the beach house with Smokey the Cat. She tends to ignore cats and his senses are lacking due to advanced age, so they were unaware of each other’s presence during much of the weekend and they did not interact.

Andie was well aware of Smokey’s cat food, however. She made several attempts to sneak into his room for a snack, and was frequently halted at the doorway.

Max tried to get her to swim in the Nestucca River, but she chose to stay near the shore.

A week later, we guided her into a deep pool on the beach by her leash. She did not like it, but she did doggy paddle a few strokes in order to cross the pool. Mission accomplished!

In addition to swimming, Andie did a lot of digging on the beach. She spent some time on the hole above, then moved on to other projects.

Memorial Day Nap

Andie spent Memorial Day Weekend at the beach house in Pacific City. At times she shared the house with 16 humans and one elderly cat. She kept herself busy by chasing other dogs on the beach, scamming treats in the kitchen, and bumming pets from the family.

By Sunday afternoon, everyone was tired. Max left the camera at the beach, so he had to steal this one from Greta’s Facebook page. More pictures of the weekend will be posted after we return from the next beach trip.

Mother' Day Photos

This weekend, we celebrated Mother’s Day at Sarah’s grandparent’s house.

As indicated by the blurry tail, Andie loves to check on the food preparations in the kitchen.

Greta was unhappy that Andie’s image was not featured in the last Dogblog post, so she did her best to hold her still so make could take a picture.

Andie tried to escape back to the kitchen.

But Greta would not be denied her photo op.

Busy Day for the Dog

On Saturday, Andie helped out at the Festival of Birds as she did last year. She kept Max and Sarah company, greeted many visitors, and graciously allowed many small children to pet her.

After the festival, the three went to the Lucky lab for some beers and bowls of water.

Max did not get a chance to take a picture of Andie, so we have to post a picture of another dog that waited for his or her people on top of a table.

Andie fell asleep as soon as we returned to the apartment. She did not stir until she could be coaxed outside for one last walk.
