Try cutting large branches off (legally ) with berries on like Hawthorn,Blackthorn,,Holly etc, now that the winter Thrushes are in. Fix them on a pole or stake, or in a bush. You may be surprised ! Chuck loads of apples down too !

Over here in california, American Robins seem a bit more present than normal but I'm really hoping for a Varied Thrush. One spect last winter in a local park. I'll try your tip and let you know if the nearctic thrushes fall for it.

Good ideas John.

Good ideas for those who don't have the trees in their gardens. No need to cut any branches here as we have Hawthorn, Holly and Pyracantha full of them with Blackies, Starling, Pigeons and Sparrows taking them regularly, but no Thrushes, yet! We've seen a good few Fieldfares and Redwings during the last week though they were the first..of many I hope! I've got some rotting apples here, so you never know.:ohdear:

You can also get some upright branches with side sprouts and simply push the apples onto them through the coe. It looks more natural for the birds I reckon.

Thanks again John because I can do that on our Crab Apple tree; so long as birds aren't into trees they hopefully won't notice the 2 different fruits. I'll let you know if it works, come to that I'll definately let you know IF they even come in the garden!
