Blue Heron

On November 25, 2007 I saw what I thought was a hawk flying overhead, but after looking more closely it was TOO BIG to be a hawk.. It landed on top of a 30 foot pine tree and rested for about 20 minutes. It was about 3-4 feet tall with a really long neck. Very graceful and regal. I took some pictures but they are too far away. I looked on the internet to see what type of bird it could be and came up with possibly a blue heron. I did not know that blue herons came to San Bernardino County in California (Southern California). Have other people seen blue herons in S. CA before. Are they common? Thanks for any info!

Hi blueheron, thanks for posting about your sighting. Yes, Great Blue Herons occur here in Southern California and can be found near most bodies of water. Your bird sounds like one. If you had a photo and wanted to post, feel free to attach to this post and we'll take a look. Best, Andy
