View Full Version : Too many Forum titles?

Based on my experience of using BirdForum and several other listservers, I believe Surfbirds Forums is already in danger of falling into the trap of introducing too many different Forums.

Frankly, if members are encougaged to use carefully considered Titles (which Moderators should not hesitate to edit to make them more informative for members) then I for one would be happy with just half a dozen key topics - at least at the outset. That way members can easily ignore topics that are of no interest to them and they're less likely to miss out on those that are.

Many of us are busy people who want to promote bird conservation in any way we can but I'm sure it's simply not possible for most to keep an eye on more than a few separate Forums.

For those who don't know BirdForum it has specific Forums for every county in Britain, state in the USA, country of the World, etc. By reviewing these you'll see that most have very few postings, often with months elapsing between the contributions. What's the point in that?

On two occasions I've posted requests for information (RFIs) in these very specific Forums, neither of which generated any helpful response over a period of weeks. I then posted the same RFI on a more general Forum and got half a dozen useful responses within 24 hours.

So my strong advice to Surfbirds is to cut down the long list of Forums now to just a few key headings and only open up new ones if it's really necessary (eg. if a particular topic begins to hyjack a Forum then by all means set up a new one).

Food for thought?

Again, agree with Raptor, there are a lot of forums which could become unused with no posts. However this forum has not been going long, surely with more members the forums would see more use.
Can I suggest promoting the forums on the Surfbirds homepage?
Thousands of birders use Surfbirds, yet only a small number use this forum as of yet. Advertising the forums more prominently on the page I think will increase attention and member numbers.

the forum needs promoting more on surfbirds as the title page is very 'busy' with info,as for the amount of threads i think it just needs to run its course for a bit longer yet, then see what people use.

Agree with all of the above - as we get busier we'll need to prune some things down so interesting threads don't get lost. Let's keep an eye on that. We do have a "latest posts" on home page and galleries but yes we need to do more promoting and we'll work on that. Those pages are already very busy with other content. We have some interesting ID topics lined up and there will be lots of forum promotion tied in to those articles. Some of those topics will be exclusive to forum members only which will make it more compelling for Surfbirds readers to join.

Thanks all for the suggestions. It's all good stuff and really appreciate the thoughts and feedback. Andy

I reckon given time it will all sort itself out and in fact you will not have enough categories. It's early days !

I hear what you say John but I just feel that it would better to start small and then expand (as and when required), rather than starting big and risking new members getting disappointed and leaving.

Anyway, let's hope you're right about needing even more Forums in the future!

The links to get into this forum aren't at all obvious and I had to look very hard to figure out how to get back in. I registered last week after stumbling upon the forum whilst looking through the Surfbirds website.

That said the forum looks great - good luck guys
