I just want to wish Surfbirds well with the new website. Looks very good although it has many similaritys to Birdforum. I do hope however that most people use their real names when on this site.
All the best
Derek

Hi Derek, thanks for posting and the comments. It's the same old Surfbirds with galleries, articles etc but we wanted to reinstate our forum (and we just added a video section (http://www.surfbirds.com/video2)). Forum software is same one Birdforum and many other sites use so should be familiar to many of our users. We want to encourage real names (either in username or signature) and want to keep things friendly. Most of all we want to meet our readers online, get your feedback on the site and the articles and encourage our readers to contribute content to Surfbirds via the forum.
Best wishes, Andy Birch

I would also like to Welcome you to the boards, Derek.
However, as you can see I am one of those who does not use their own name and I think it's going to be a real shame if this is going to keep on being brought up every time a new member joins. I think it will put a lot of people off coming here if this is going to become to much an issue. With the greatest respect we don't know that anyone really uses their real names, we only know what people tell us their names are!
I think chatting about a very mutual subject is the most important thing on message boards and that's what should concern us most, not the name someone calls themselves. Some people are still quite wary of the internet and rightly so, but many of us have personal reasons why we don't wish our names to be on web sites and that should be respected. Choice I believe is something we should all have.

Welcome Derek. You don't need to worry shadow, it's all voluntary. We want this to be a friendly board so as long as posts are constructive and patient, it doesn't matter if a member chooses to keep their real name under cover. Best, Andy

Thank you Shadow and Andy for your comments.
Of course you are right Shadow and it is personal choice if you use your real name, i am not making an issue out of it. Personally i like discussing things with people on first name terms but it won't stop me or put me off if people choose not to use their name.
all the best
