Hello

Like a lot of other British birders I get excited about rare birds especially when I am in a position to twitch for one. So far my twitches have been very infrequent, much less frequent than when I was living in England. This year's excitement (for me) has been porvided by the ABA's first Loggerhead KIngbird (Key West, FL) and a cracking Green-breasted Mango in Dublin, Georgia.
So in an attempt to generate some excitement about rarities I thought I would post what has been happening in Florida, rarity wise, so far this December. I hope eventually this forum will be used by birders all over the US and Canada, providing an internet meeting place to share stories, news and pictures of rare birds. Have a Great Xmas.

This morning I photographed a Lazuli Bunting (first year male?)
coming to the feeders at the home of Lois and Leon White in Alva, Lee
County. Photos on request to me. This is most probably the first
record for Lee County as far as I can ascertain. The Whites are very
gracious folks and have an open-door policy for birders wanting to
see this bird. They also have Painted & Indigo Buntings as well as
American Goldfinches and White-winged Doves visiting their feeders.
The Lazuli often associates with the Painted Buntings and sometimes
the Indigos. One or two Ruby-throated Hummingbirds also visit the
sugar feeders in their yard. The Whites live at 21281 Pearl Street in
the town of Alva. Look for their yard directly across from the Alva
Post Office on Pearl Street. The easiest way to get to Alva is via
S.R. 80 then turn north over the bridge (over the Caloosahatchee)
onto Broadway Street followed by an immediate left onto Pearl Street
by the Alva Post Office. The feeders can easily be seen from the
street. Don't be surprised if the Whites come out to greet you and
have you sign their guest book. The best time to see this bird is
early i.e. 7:00AM -7:30AM or late in the afternoon (on occasion).
Lois keeps records of when the birds come to the feeders in her yard.
Her e-mail address is loismcwhite AT sbcglobal.net Here's a map showing
the Whites' residence:

http://www.caloosabirdclub.org/CaloosaBirdClubMaps/Alva.jpg

When the map comes up, click on it and it will enlarge.

Good luck if you go for this bird.

Cheers.

Hi Andy, how rare is Lazuli in FL? Annual vagrant?

Limeybirder
February 7th, 2008, 02:12 AM
I am not exactly sure Andy but the one last year was twitched by many of the state's top listers, so I assume they needed it therefore it's rare. It is still listed on the FOS website review list so there are less than 10 records. In the 4 years I have lived here the 3 records over the last 2 winters are the only ones I have heard of.
