Taken in my garden in September this year. This species (Argiope bruennichi) is not common but widespread (worldwide) and there are many sub-species and races.
This is a female which has just caught and cocooned a Hornet which is about one a half inches long, so gives you some idea of the size of this spider.
This is a ventral view; the dorsal side is black and yellow transverse stripes, rather like her prey.
