Hi,

I don't know if you can help - but we are seeking publicity for a new
birding challenge designed to keep people away from the internal
combustion engine . Dubbed the Big Green Big Year = BGBG and pronounced
Bigby all the information is available at
http://www.sparroworks.ca/bigby.html

We'd love to get people outside North America involved ... any help
spreading the word would be greatly appreciated. needless to say, there
is NO commercial involvement in this at all.

thanks in advance

Manics (or maybe "maniacs") - I am an active "birder" rather than passive "birdwatcher", but this sort of endeavor is, in my view, the worst facet of the hobby.

I'm envious of all the travel and fantastic birds and wildlife they will see - non-stop for a year. Although I need my home comforts it would probably not be for me. I guess the carbon footprint has to be huge which is not good but they seem to be raising money for various conservation programs in the americas so maybe that will outweigh it? They're also generating a lot of publicity and I've seen the Biggest Twitch mentioned in various media outlets so raising awareness amongst Joe Public of the abundance of species of birds on this planet (that are dwindling every year) is not a bad thing. Quite a few non-birding people travel round the world for a year so at least this couple are birders raising awareness of conservation causes as they go. Maybe we should support them?

I guess I'd better get off my "...." as the Brits say and get on my bike. I think 150 isn't too hard to get here in Weslaco.

Hello "antshrike", it would be rather nice, I feel, if you could somewhat tone down your signature in terms of font size; it does rather look as if you are shouting rather loudly for no apparent reason, and does detract significantly from what your posts actually say. And, while I am at it, it would be even better if you could use your real name (unless, of course, you are George W. something or other).

antshrike, I should think you're in a great place for racking up a huge list carbon-neutral style.

I see Alan and Ruth Miller are over 1600 for the year so far (http://www.surfbirds.com/cgi-bin/surfbirds/display.cgi?list=list349&lowVal=0&highVal=49). Not bad seeing as we are only in March. What's the record anyone know?

Although i am not an avid birder, I have never travelled great distances just to see a particular bird. To me birding is all about seeing whats on your doorsep, particularly if its unusual, and to get to know the birds of your own area.
However, if i´m on holiday i willl of course look at whats around.

Saving the rainforests will do much more than saving a few miles of your personal carbon footprint.
