I visited the town of Sivasagar on 2 Jan 08.This town has several tanks(reservoirs),the largest being Joysagar and sibsagar tanks. These used to attract huge numbers of waterfowl especially bar headed and greylag geese but I was surprised to find not a single goose! The reason being introduction of boating facilities (in joysagar) to attract tourists! In sibsagar tank however there were a few Spotbill ducks,Tufted ducks, Ferrugineous Pochards,Common teals,Common pochards,4 Great crested grebes including 1 in breeding plumage and surprisingly also a few Greater Scaup!
Also tried to visit the nearby Panidihing bird sanctuary that day but the wooden bridge and the unmetalled road leading to the park were damaged.Still managed to see a flock of more than 50 Purple moorhens, 2 Ruddy Shelducks, Lesser Adjutants, Bronze winged jacanas, 2 White backed vultures and little cormorants.
On 4 Jan,visited the Bagori (Western) Range at Kaziranga National park. Saw the following-
more than 300 Bar headed Geese
Mallards
Spotted billed Pelicans
Stork billed Kingfisher
Pied kingfisher
Common Kingfisher
2 Black necked storks
Greater spotted Eagle
Pallas's Fish Eagle
Emerald dove
Yellow footed Green Pigeon
Tibetan shrike
Rufous Woodpecker
White rumped Shama
2 Swamp Francolins
Red Junglefowls
Indian rollers
Stonechat
Grey herons
Also saw more than 15 Rhinos including a few calves, many Hog deers,Swamp deers, 3 Sambars and Wild buffaloes.
Also saw a Grey headed fish eagle at Burapahar (Kaziranga) on 2 Jan and another one at Samaguri beel (Nagaon dist.) on 5 Jan and 2 Crested Serpent Eagles near the highway viewing point at Kaziranga on 4 Jan.
