Haha, well as the ones that are 'cast-off' are usually the ones that know what they are talking about, it can't be that bad a thing

Sorry to deviate from the the original thread, but -
I didn't " shift" really- I started on Surfbirds long before I went on any of the others.
I think the only reason BF is so popular is because posters of bird pictures, especially those just starting, like people to say " thats a good pic"
BF admin used to advise people to post comments because "if you do- you'll get one back " !
If this forum had a europe gallery with comments facilities- members would rocket !

Steady on lads, I have posted a comment in my time!!
All of your contributions to the surfbirds forums have been excellent and very much appreciated, but let's calm down and move on; be positive about the good aspects of birding and bird discussion rather than go down the 'personal comments' route. I know its good to get things off your chest, and by all means have the thoughts, but try to keep them in your head if possible.
Now what can we talk about next?
Cheers all.

howabout
reverse migration / pseudo vagrancy?
Why do east coast yanks always turn up in winter?
the seawatching potential of early summer?
the proliferation of birders' websites - is birding devolving back to the masses?
is there life without a pager?
howabout a 'predictions' thread - basic weather analysis to encourage people to get out and look for stuff?

Point taken Brian.
I felt I had to clarify the situation before some one else did.
Cheers

Phew, well we all got through that (I hope) without major casualties!! (and there was me thinking the thread was titled "Rough-necked Moderator".
John, I sympathise and wholly agree with your comment above. I joined NSN and paid my money for upload facilities purely because they have a "Europe Chapter" (and a very nice load of guys they are too). I held (and still hold) the viewpoint that bird photography in N America is a very different game to what it is in Europe; they have more and better opportunities, and folk living in Florida, for example, can produce far better photographs than we can in Europe (a lot of people have Ospreys nesting on platforms in their gardens - sorry, refuse to use the term "backyard") or in Canada and Alaska have Bald Eagles perching on their jeeps waiting for food. I also got well fed up with seeing a sequence of shots posted and then the deluge of mindless, insincere, comments from Skip, Chuck, Wes, Herb, Walt, etc. saying "Awesome shots, great series, blew me away, thanks for sharing".
I disassociated myself from NSN (they might like to think they banned me, but I walked out and slammed the door very hard behind me before allowing them that satisfaction) when I discovered the extent to which raptor photographers were using pegged live bait to get their shots, something I find barbaric and unforgivable (as I have stated on another thread which I initiated here). NSN and FM forums seem to not only condone this practice but encourage it in the pursuit of "super shots". I do not think that European photographers/birders in general would put up with this (although certain factions in Malta, Cyprus and Italy might find it quite entertaining).

Aaah, life without a pager.
I had one once, but having given it up, I feel much more relaxed about my birding, without the constant feeling that I should chase things - mind you as I am out of the country when most of the good birds turn up, I don't get the chance. Many birders in Suffolk time their days off to coincide with me being away cos they know good birds will turn up just to .... me off!
My found list has become the most important to me, and I keep no other. What it has done is to make me put myself at locations looking to find things for myself rather than rush around like a fool. Mind you, I am lucky to live on the east coast, where things are likely to turn up - I found the Lesser Yellowlegs at Southwold about a mile away from my house, but not as close as the Greater Yellowlegs I found a while back.....
This kind of birding is so much more productive and satisfying. I envy those birders just starting out, the sense of wonder, with everything being new - getting a new pair of bins or new scope can give you the same feeling.
The proliferation of bird information (like pagers) is a good thing, but simply looking for yourself is just as good or better. Try it you might like it....

Anyone else noticed that as of this moment in time one of the users logged on is called "Birdforum" and if you select their user profile they (he, she or it) comes up as "Banned".
