View Full Version : Leica Ultravid HD?

Just wondered whether anyone has got their hands on any of the new Ultravid HD range, and if so what is their opinion. I currently have the "old" Ultravid 10x42 which are excellent, but still reckon that my even "older" Trinovid 10x50 BA are better optically (but with advancing years they feel as though I have a bag of cement around my neck).

Since the new model seems to be trickling through and I understand that the current Ultravids are now being discounted to shift stock, the price differential makes the HDs roughly 50% more expensive. I cannot believe that they could be optically and mechanically 50% better than the old model.

Some mates who went to the last Bird Fair had a look through what was there on the Leica stand and, although they said there was a lot of "ooohing and aaaghing", they could not detect any noticeable improvement in IQ.

There could be a reason for this: one of my friends (who is in the optical glass business, but nothing to do with "sports optics") who recently went to see a well known retailer in the U.K. was told that although the models on show at the BF were the new HD housing, they just had the old Ultravid glass in them because they could not meet the BF deadline for prototype production. Gossip maybe, but given Leica's recent problems it just might be true.

Apology for long post but I am the sort of person who gets a bit "itchy" when a "new and improved model" is released, and with the Leica HDs, Televid 82mm APO 'scope, and Canon's 800 mm lens coming this year it is going to be quite an expensive time!

Will look forward to your comments when you have had a chance to use this binocular in the field Andrea. Will you be testing this against your experience with the "old" Ultravid 10x32?

I just got a new pair of Leica Ultravid HD 10x32

I've been testing it for quite a long time and in many situation and compared it to my old Ultavid...

I find little differenmces but that in bad light the new HD is even better then Ultravid, at the very top in the world among binoculars. The colour and sharpmness is a bit better than previous one, and really good... quite neutral in colour, more then previous Ultravid. The aquadura to make the lens more easely clean is something I can't find out really how to test for sure, though it appeared to me a bit easier to take off salt spray and rain drops then previous, but may be just a perception after waiting it...

In italy Polyphoto Spa is the official national seller

Thank you for those comments Andrea.

Your remark about the new Ultravid HD being better in low light is rather odd since you have gone from a 10x42 to a 10x32. Have you also used the "old" (non-HD) version of the 10x32?

Care to elaborate a bit on optical and mechanical quality Dean?

Great quality, superb bins, I just think my Swarovski EL are as good, & around £400 cheaper.

Ok, I'm a little late on this one but thought I'd give my two cents worth. I own an 8x42 HD and an "older" 8x42 Trinovid BN (which I bought for myself not long ago as a work bin and am quite fond of). I certainly do note a difference in the optical quality between the two, especially brightness and more true, crisper images on the part of the HD.

I like the feel of the HD as well (as compared to the Trinovids) and the focus wheel is noticeably smoother than the Ultravid BR - I owned an 8x50 BR not too long ago and sold it for the more compact and equally as bright (if not more so) HD. The focus wheel of the BR, with time and exposure to the elements, had a tendancy to bind and catch making fine focusing a frustration. This is entirely corrected in the HD.

Now, is the HD worth the price tag? Well... I do like them but I would have preferred to pay a bit less - however, I do tend to be brand loyal and feel that Leica makes (for me) the best product on the market. My one qualm; I do feel that Leica needs to pay a bit more attention to quality control at times...
