I mentioned a while back, a contraption I made to go in the car door. It was a little difficult to explain so these pics may help. It just wedges down behind the door handle and the "give" in the door trim below the window holds it really tight. I must add that I normally use a large Benbow ball and socket head. I often drive along slowly with the camera attatched.
If you like it, you will have to go out and buy a Citoen Xsara !!

Hi John,
Thanks for posting the details of you car pod , just a couple of questions,
1.- other than it is wedged in tight, what stops it tipping towards the door handle?
2. - your 50-500 Sigma is reasonably heavy, do you think something like this might hold a 600/4 ?
regards Lastlight.

Its the edge of the handle it is pushed through and the pressure caused by the spongy trim below the window. The top of the wood below the head is slightly wedge shaped and covered in glossy gaffa tape. So, as you push it down and through, it doesn't rip the trim (wife gets mad ! ) and it gets tighter. I am not sure about the 600 mm. You've got a lot of length which causes more wobble. It probably would . I'll buy one and try it !
